Precinct 2: East Ulverstone

East Ulverstone

East Ulverstone has a wide range of parks, playgrounds and open spaces, including foreshore areas, riverside parks, neighbourhood reserves, memorial spaces and recreation areas.

Overall, the precinct is well served by open space. Large parks such as Fairway Park, Bicentennial Park, Anzac Park and Shropshire Park already provide many of the area’s major recreation opportunities, including playgrounds, picnic areas, pathways, dog exercise areas and spaces for community use.

The plan proposes continuing to invest in the parks and open spaces that serve the greatest community need, while reducing duplication where several small reserves are located very close together.

What is proposed

Council is proposing to:

  • Continue improving major parks such as Anzac Park, Bicentennial Park and Fairway Park
  • Replace ageing playground equipment, seating and tables at key sites including:
    • Anzac Park
    • Bicentennial Park
    • Fairway Park
    • Thomas Street Playground
    • Lions Park
  • Finalise and implement the Fairway Park Master Plan
  • Prepare a master plan for the future development of Bicentennial Park, including more flexible spaces, improved facilities and a focus on a First Nations Cultural Hub
  • Prepare a master plan for the future development of Anzac Park
  • Develop and implement an Improvement Plan for the Ulverstone General Cemetery
  • Continue improving footpaths and pathway connections through a Shared Pathway Masterplan
  • Establish new local open space in growth areas, including land provided through subdivisions at Henslowes Road and any future subdivision at 112 Trevor Street
Proposed changes to some sites

Some smaller reserves are proposed for decommissioning because nearby parks already provide similar access and function. These include:

  • Charleston Street Reserve
  • Travers Place Reserve
  • Eastland Drive (former visitor information centre site)
  • Smith Street Playground
  • Spencer Street (Frog Lane)
  • Hope Street Reserve

Some sites will continue to play an important role:

  • Barker Street Reserve is intended to help serve new residential growth areas and may be upgraded over time
  • Hensby Court Reserve is proposed to be retained
  • Smith Street Reserve is proposed to remain as a buffer to the nearby industrial area
  • McCulloch Street Reserve may still have a stormwater function, so its future will depend on further investigation once nearby development is complete

What this means:

Other important improvements

The plan also identifies the need to:

  • Improve access and safety at the Nicholsons Point boat ramp
  • Improve seating, signage and road maintenance at the Ulverstone General Cemetery
  • Keep strengthening pathway links across the precinct, especially in areas where trails and footpaths are still limited
