Precinct 5: Sulphur Creek and Preservation Bay
Sulphur Creek and Preservation Bay are shaped by their coastline, beaches and foreshore. These open spaces are mainly used for family recreation, beach access, water-based activities and enjoying the natural landscape.
Compared with other areas, there are fewer local parks and open spaces spread throughout this precinct. Outside of the foreshore, Sulphur Creek Hall Reserve is the main local open space for the community.
What is proposed
Council is proposing to:
- Increase landscaping and tree canopy across the precinct
- Consider the future of the boat ramp at Dunkies Reserve
Dunkies Reserve boat ramp
The boat ramp at Dunkies Reserve was built and is maintained by the local community. However, the plan identifies a number of safety concerns, including:
- Rock shelves close to the ramp
- Difficulty launching safely
- Access issues for vehicles and trailers crossing the railway line
Because there are already boat ramp and jetty facilities nearby in Penguin and Heybridge, the plan raises whether the Dunkies Reserve ramp is still needed. As part of the Parks and Playground Community consultation in May 2025, no community feedback was received which leaves this still unresolved.
What this means
These recommendations are intended to:
- support the main community spaces already serving the area
- improve shade, landscaping and comfort across the precinct
- make sure access to recreation is safe and practical
- carefully review facilities where there are known safety concerns
