Precinct 8: Leven River Corridor
The Leven River Corridor includes Gawler, Gunns Plains, Nietta and North Motton.
The area includes river and bushland settings, recreation spaces and places of environmental value. These open spaces support family recreation, sport, water-based activities and conservation.
Overall, the plan finds that most parts of this rural precinct are reasonably well served by local open space. The main exception is Gawler, where there may be a need for a local park closer to where people live.
What is proposed
Council is proposing to:
- Replace ageing park furniture, including seats and tables, across the precinct
- Investigate opportunities for a local neighbourhood open space in Gawler
- Investigate a small playground at Bannons Park
- Undertake a track and asset review at Castra Falls
- Define Taylors Flats as passive open space
Gawler
The plan identifies Gawler as an area that is currently under-served by local open space. Because of this, it recommends investigating whether a neighbourhood open space could be provided in the area, such as at the Gawler Hall site.
This does not mean a new park has been confirmed. It means the need for local open space in Gawler should be explored further.
Bannons Park
Although Bannons Park is not within a main township area, it is well used by both locals and visitors. The plan recommends looking at whether a small playground should be added to better support families using the site.
Castra Falls and Leven Canyon
Castra Falls and Leven Canyon are important natural and recreation areas in the precinct. Council recommends a review of tracks and assets at Castra Falls to help guide future maintenance and improvements.
At Leven Canyon, major recreation assets have recently been renewed and work on tracks is continuing.
What this means
These recommendations are intended to:
keep supporting the parks and reserves already serving local communities
look at where there may be gaps in access, especially in Gawler
improve key visitor and recreation sites over time
make sure open spaces continue to meet community needs in a practical way
