Central Coast Council will consider a recommendation this month to reopen and upgrade the much-loved Anzac Park Rocketship in Ulverstone.

The proposal follows strong community input through Council’s recent Parks and Playgrounds Consultation, which attracted more than 1,200 responses via online surveys, drop-in sessions and social media. Results revealed a deep affection for the Rocketship’s heritage alongside a strong desire for future-focused, accessible play features.

If endorsed at Council’s July meeting, the proposed hybrid design would:

  • Reopen the original Rocketship with essential maintenance and safety upgrades
  • Add slides to the existing structure
  • Incorporate a side ramp and play panels to enhance accessible and inclusive play

Director of Infrastructure Services Nick Browne said the community’s feedback was passionate and constructive.

“What we heard was clear – people love the Rocketship and its history, but also want it to be safe, fun and accessible for the next generation,” Mr Browne said. “This proposed hybrid design honours the iconic structure while adding slides, inclusive access and new play panels. It strikes the perfect balance between preserving the past and embracing the future.”

The design reflects community feedback from a close vote between preserving the original rocket (41%) and installing a new modern version with tower slides (36%). Qualitative responses highlighted the Rocketship’s cultural value and historical identity, while also calling for safety, visual appeal and accessibility.

This project forms part of Council’s broader commitment to improving local parks and play spaces, supported by $750,000 in the 2025–26 Capital Budget for playground upgrades.

Future updates on other open space projects—including plans to revitalise Ulverstone’s Fairway Park—will be shared as Council continues its analysis of the Parks & Playgrounds Community Consultation.

Council will decide on the proposed Rocketship upgrade at its meeting on 21 July 2025.
